Restful sleep starts with comfort that lasts all night.

My child wakes during the night

If your child wakes frequently through the night, routine is rarely the full answer. More often, their body is struggling to stay comfortable as conditions change around them. Night waking is usually the body’s response to something physical. And the most common trigger is temperature.

The Science

Temperature regulation is the strongest predictor of uninterrupted sleep in children. When core body temperature rises even slightly, the brain triggers a partial arousal. The child surfaces. If conditions feel different from when they fell asleep, they wake fully.

Children’s thermoregulatory systems are still developing. They heat up faster than adults and cool down slower. They cannot self-correct the way we can. They just wake up.

Sleep cycles are also shorter in children — around 50 minutes in younger children, lengthening gradually with age. At the end of every cycle, the brain briefly surfaces and runs a check: is everything the same as when I fell asleep? If the room has warmed, or a fabric has become heavy and uncomfortable, that check becomes a wake-up.

Getting a child to sleep is only half the job. The environment at 3am needs to match the environment at 7pm.

You don’t need to change everything.Often, improving just one layer of comfort is enough to help sleep settle naturally.
